Question
Soil test says my pH is 8.4 — is herb farming even possible?
I have 2 bighas near Bandikui. The soil card shows pH 8.4 and organic carbon 0.31 percent. Everybody in my village grows mustard and gram. I want to try something with better rates but I do not know if this soil will support it. Is 8.4 too alkaline? Should I fix the soil first, and how long does that take? I do not have money to waste on a failed season, so honest answers please.

8.4 is workable, not ideal. Ashwagandha and isabgol both tolerate alkaline soil better than most crops. Do not try to fix pH in one season, it does not work that way. Add 2-3 tonnes of well rotted FYM per bigha and grow a dhaincha green manure before your main crop. Your organic carbon at 0.31 is the bigger problem than the pH. Start with half a bigha, not the whole plot.

My land was pH 8.2 when I started. It is farmable. Go slow and do not buy any soil conditioner from a travelling salesman.

Agree with the green manure advice. It cost me almost nothing and changed the soil in two seasons.
