Neem is the common trade name for Azadirachta indica A. Juss., a tree whose leaf, seed, bark and oil each move through a separate part of the trade. Buyers range from Ayurvedic and cosmetic formulators to biopesticide and organic-fertiliser manufacturers.
Botanical identity and part used
Neem belongs to the Meliaceae, or mahogany, family. It is a fast-growing evergreen tree, usually 12 to 20 metres tall, with pinnate leaves, small white flowers and yellow-green drupe fruit.
Dried leaf is the primary Ayurvedic and cosmetic trade grade. Seed, deshelled kernel, cold-pressed oil, bark and de-oiled cake are quoted as separate items, each carrying its own specification, and none substitutes for another on a purchase order.
Where it grows in India
Neem grows across most of India as a roadside, farm-boundary and avenue tree rather than as a plantation crop. Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh account for most organised commercial leaf and seed collection.
Rajasthan's dry western tracts carry a heavy natural neem population, which keeps leaf and seed collection active close to our Jaipur base for most of the year.
Harvest and processing
Leaf is hand-picked through the year, with the heaviest flush after the monsoon. It is shade or low-temperature dried, then milled and sieved to the buyer's mesh.
Fruit ripens between May and August depending on region, turning from green to yellow as it matures. Ripe fruit is collected, the pulp removed, and the seed sun-dried before decortication releases the kernel used for oil pressing.
Kernels are cold-pressed or expeller-pressed for oil. The residual press cake is dried and either milled for organic fertiliser or retained coarse as a biopesticide soil input.

What is the typical lead time, and does supply vary by season?
7 to 12 working days for stock leaf and cake grades from Jaipur. Seed and oil supply is tightest outside the May to August fruiting season, so buyers running a fixed azadirachtin-ppm oil programme should contract ahead of season. Organic-certified leaf lots take 3 to 4 weeks.
What quality tests apply, and what is the shelf life of neem leaf and oil?
Leaf powder is tested for moisture, ash, heavy metals, pesticide residues and microbiology, and holds for 24 months in sealed packing. Oil and seed kernel are tested primarily for azadirachtin content and are best used within 12 to 18 months, since azadirachtin degrades faster under heat and light than most leaf constituents.
